An Op Ed on Government Intervention by America's premier living historian, Howard Zinn. Go to: http://www.northjersey.com/opinion/moreviews/30993174.html to read Zinn, or you can watch my video. The following is an excerpt:

"From the start, in the first sessions of the first Congress, the government interfered with the free market by establishing tariffs to subsidize manufacturers and by becoming a partner with private banks in establishing a national bank. This role of big government supporting the interests of the business classes has continued all through the nation's history. Thus, in the 19th century the government subsidized canals and the merchant marine.

In the decades before and during the Civil War, the government gave away some 100 million acres of land to the railroads, along with considerable loans to keep the railroad interests in business. The 10,000 Chinese and 3,000 Irish who worked on the transcontinental railroad got no free land and no loans, only long hours, little pay, accidents and sickness."

  • Social programs are great if they work without too much bureaucracy and confusion from the government. Do you have any solutions for our current predicament in regards to the social security crisis and the retirement of baby boomers? It seems like our economy is over extended and significant cut backs will have to be made to maintain our current lifestyle.

  • Part I:

Read "Nemesis" by Chalmers Johnson to understand the nature of America's Empire. You already understand it costs 54% of the federal budget to operate.

America must walk away from its Imperial pursuits. If it does not, economist Paul Craig Roberts says if America doesn't give up Imperialism, America will go bankrupt. It may already be to late.

If we give up Empire and return to being a Republic, we will lower our costs dramatically. These are the cutbacks that must be made.

  • What, exactly, are you arguing for?

America certainly needs to end it's empire and go back to a small military and end corporate welfare, but do you want big government?

  • Hello:

I my YT video: Is Change Possible, I argue significant, meaningful change is not possible. This leaves the individual alone to make changes in his or her personal perspective - to become authentic.

All the Best / Mike Hogan

  • But how can you espouse a leftist view, while at the same time, opposing government?

  • Hello:

    See my videos entitled:

    Varieties of Socialism

    Emma Goldman

    James Connolly

Included in the Varieties of Socialism are two forms of community organization that do not involve government: Anarchism (Emma Goldman) & Syndicalism (James Connolly).
