What Drag Racing was all about in 1965.

Lions Drag Strip at the peak of drag racing's golden age is the backdrop for this award winning documentary about the Adams,Wayre & Stewart Top Fuel Team's trials and tribulations in 1965 and focuses on the life of Rick "the Iceman" Stewart (the current NHRA chief starter) as he attempts to grab the second half of the two part world's speed record. • Great Footage

  • Thanks, its from the movie. I just re-edited these scenes and added the music for a teaser.

  • the adams wayre stewart car turned into the adams wayre mulligan car after stewart left and john mulligan drove for them.

  • Your correct. Did you see John Mulligan with them toward the end of the DVD Movie in the garage wrenching on the motor?

  • Check out @facestyle1000 speed racen

  • At 0:59 It's Tom "Mongoose" McKuen driving the Southern California Plymouth Dealer's Association "Hemi Cuda" with a blown & injected 426 "Elephant" motor in the back seat. The car operated with direct-drive only (no trans) with McKuen protected from an engine explosion by a solid metal shield (clearly seen, behind the Goose, beginning @ 0:59). McKuen flipped the original Hemi Cuda, at Lions, in '64 when "negative air pressure" got under the front end. A 2nd car was built & he drove into '65.

  • Great video!! I always loved the diggers!

  • @jshell8181 Drag City!

  • Whats the name of the song in the video?

  • Thanks for this great footage. Sure wish we could go back there & just enjoy the drags.. When drag racing was about the cars...

  • That's my Dad @ :43, Joe Mondello

  • 0:16 was Mike Sorokin and the Surfers car ~ one of the strongest left coast cars ever to fire up. I was @ OCIR at the end of th 1967 when Mike was killed driving Tony Waters' top fuel car. At about 1:15 you see the push start days @ Lions before they installed the rollers behind the line. I lived @ Lions from '64 until I was drafted in '69.

  • Love the fuelers.
