It was common knowledge. In 1925, she was arrested for taking part in a lesbian orgy. She was a mentor to Bessie Smith, who bailed her out of jail.

Your teacher was definitely horribly wrong. Part of what made Ma Rainey famous is that she was one of the first black RECORDING artists. She made over 100 recordings during her career.

Your teacher may have been confusing MA RAINEY and FLORENCE MILLS. There are a few recordings of MA RAINEY, but none of the other superstar of that time MS. FLORENCE MILLS.
