There are not many sopranos who can keep me interested in Desdemona's long scene. The reason is Tebaldi. Her natural phrasing, crystal clear Italian and combination of powerful and tender sound have made her my one and only Desdemona.

  • Is this from the 1954 Erede recording?

  • no the 1949 recording sessions

  • You're welcome though you must be the first person to enjoy Callas' shaky Ave Maria. No one is asking you to compare Tebaldi to Callas, they were different singers.

  • What year is this from?

  • 1950

  • Magnificent . A peerless Desdemona . Voice and phrasing are incredible.

  • Perfectly balanced. Not overdone. Not underdone. Beautiful.

  • SUBLIME!!!!

  • @Fairpavel I can add Margaret Price to fine Desdemonas...

  • She owned this role!

  • ahh the perfect Verdian soprano... gracious and sweet dignified and majestic

  • LA VOCE D'ANGELO.... Come l'aveva chiamata Toscanini quando la sentì...

  • Finale sublime!

  • Renata Tebaldi and Lucine Amara were the only sopranos that ever moved me

to tears at the Met Opera House in New York City. I did see her as Desdemona

    there.

  • La voce più bella di tutti i tempi.

  • and kiri of course

  • I remain unconvinced that Desdemona was written for a spinto. The reasons are quite clear in the score as well as the story. The Otello-Desdemona dynamic is about contrasts, from ethnic, cultural, and class, this is also represented by Verdi in the music. Where Otello must be a dramatic tenor to handle the heavy lower register singing and orchestration, Desdemona does not have to carry an orchestra. Her character doesn't require much heavy singing. Tebaldi was the best since Ponselle!
