The Lost Jewish Music of Transylvania (excerpts)
By Keith Nurse

The album is the well-known Hungarian folk group, Muzsikás' attempt to reconstruct Jewish instrumental music from the Máramaros region of northern Transylvania.

In spite of evidence of the existence of musicians known as the klezmorim, no recording or notation of pre-Second World War Jewish folk music survived the decimation of the Holocaust.

The project began in 1988 when Muzsikás became interested in exploring Jewish instrumental music and were introduced to Zoltán Simon, who was encouraged by the Hungarian composer and collector of folk music, Zoltán Kodály to collect Jewish folk music from Hungarian villages. Simon gave the group some of his transcriptions which had never been published.

The group decided to investigate further the links between Hungarian and Jewish folk music and the possibilities of reconstructing the latter.

Their music invokes both a sense of celebration and of sorrow.
If the real Jewish music of Transylvania is gone, this disc makes sure it will not be forgotten.

Last Message to those who do not take the time to read the review in the infobox and misunderstand the video:

The videoclip is about the loss and survival of human values.

  • Dear Friends,

Considering the fact that I have written permission from Muzsikás Folk Ensemble to upload this video as I have informed YT staff I find it surprising that YT has muted the sound.

The video appears on my channel as public so I cannot even dispute the case.

  • @hagakure90 Stop this commemoration plague. It is fantastic that the music remains through the noble effort of some people. Nevertheless, this perpetual remembering is as bad as watching some horror films only to fulfill the need for thrills. It is not better than watching children abuse films oly to break down in tears and say "how cruel!"...Besides, it is a Wedding dance! So c'mon! Let it breathe! Let the listeners enjoy the music, if you had this wonderful idea of posting it.

  • I just love this music. I was looking for it for ages. I hope no one gonna remove it....

  • מוסיקה שמח / עצוב תמונות

  • This is a very weird choice of images for a wedding song.

  • Funny.. I can't upload the same track. My track is blocked by WMG and you are able to show it on Youtube.

  • GORGEOUS music.

  • Perfect : ) it is hard to find such good musik

  • @Brewskin78

It does if you read the explanation in the infobox.

But to make it clearer for you:

Jews were deported from the Máramaros region by the Nazis in WW2, and Muzsikás has collected the little that remained of their musical heritage (klezmer music).

The video is a commemoration of the victims and of their lost culture.

  • @hagakure90 Why the nazi gear? It. doesn't. Make. Sense. Explain.
