Was that Sutherland dressed as Tosca singing Vissi D'Arte at the beginning (right at the end of the aria) ? Sutherland did not have a Puccini voice, she was unsuited to Tosca. I may be wrong of course but she is not known for Tosca; she just didn't sing all that much Puccini opera. A Puccini singer can do Tosca and Madame Butterfly. Sutherland sang Turandot on recording (I still think it's unsuited to her). She was a bel canto star- Lucia, Bolena, Lucrezia. She was a lyric coloratura.

Tito sounds like a tenor. He doesn't have a deep voice at all.

I don't quite agree with everything Ms. Curtin said regarding the character of Marguerite. I agree that Marguerite is a virtuous woman and always longing, foremost, to be a good Christian woman. But I don't think she's a "ninny" or boring to play because of that. In some ways, I actually admire the character of Marguerite for, despite the horrible temptation in the end to turn completely evil and go to the Devil, she finally breaks down and asks for God to save her.

Enjoyed all participations in this discussion. But the highlight for me was to see, for the first time, Tito Gobbi the man in normal clothes and speaking such brilliant English. I had thought that my admiration for him as the best singing actor could not be higher. Bravo and thanks for this upload!!
