Here is early recording pioneer & prolific Baritone Arthur Collins (1864-1933) singing "Brother Noah Gave out Checks for Rain" Composed by Arthur Longbrake, from 1907 on an original 10" Victor Grand Prize Black and Gold Label Record. This Baseball/Bible/Race related comedy classic tells the Story, of Deacon Jones' novel idea to raise money to fix the leaky Church Roof. The Congregation will have a baseball game on Emancipation Day!! When one of the Congregation protests the Good Deacon. sets her straight that this idea is right out of the "Good Book" and proceeds in detail to name the players. as follows: Eve stole first, Adam second;
St. Peter umpired the game.
Rebecca went to the well with a pitcher,
And Ruth in the field won fame.
Goliath was struck out by David —
A base hit was made on Abel by Cain,
And the Prodigal Son made one home-run.
Brother Noah gave out checks for rain. This wonderful example of early racial/baseball comedy, is being played on a Victor Type II Talking machine circa 1905.
