The song was composed by Kurt Weill of "Three Penny Opera" and "Mack the Knife" fame, with words by Maxwell Anderson, for the 1938 Broadway musical "Knickerbocker Holiday." The show was not particularly successful, but the use of the song in the 1950s film "September Affair" reintroduced it to the American public and unto the hit parade.
