if you watch a lot of the Italian NeoRealism films like Fellini's Circus etc they are subtle but do critisize the catholic church even as they filmed in a predominanlty catholic country like Italy. I think it's in La Estrada where you see a procession and the saints and pagan catholic gods are shown on one side but in the back you see it is cheap cardboard...
