Are you ready for a Nerdy Valentines Day? http://bit.ly/WekHqK
In which John discusses the absolute insanity of front yards. Turf grass is the biggest irrigated crop in the US; we irrigate grass almost exclusively with drinkable water; also, you will be surprised to learn that grass is INEDIBLE. Plus, I dislike mowing the lawn when it is 115 outside.

Lots of people (particularly people who work in the lawn business) will note that turf grass is a carbon sink (particularly if you mow the lawn frequently). This is true, but there are far more efficient carbon sinks that don't require so much water.

How about you just plant cat grass and raise an army of cats than will graze off of your lawn and protect you from intruders with a rain of claws and teeth and things?

We have these bright yellow flowers growing in our backyard and I think they look nice, but my mom calls them weeds.

Even from status quo bias, I can't imagine, that, with the cooperate back of America, driven by advertisements, with total support of our government, would allow anything like this to happen. We would save a lot but cooperations in the food industry would also lose a lot, which sounds unlikely, regardless of the health benefits and people becoming self sufficient. It sounds like something our government could not allow. But maybe we'll find different circumstances, like WWII, again someday.

That is exactly what I was thinking.

Basicly if you closed your eyes at 2:34 you would be in the UK during WW2 growing food in your front garden, which is rained on by rain.

And gardens were a status symbol in Britian in the 1800's because

    A. We had a very rich colonial upper-class that wanted to master nature.

    B. We had plenty of cheap labour.

    C. We owned lots of foriegn lands where we could export exotic plants from.

The US dosn't have any of these...or ever had these.

    Hence the confusion.
