I visited the US capital five days after inauguration. On a brisk January morning I wandered out to the mall, bathed in a bright, uncommon light, not a cloud in the sky. Strolling past the Vietnam and Korean War Memorials, as I climbed the stairs to the Lincoln Memorial and noticed a falcon - or eagle? - perched on one of the pedestals eyeing the few tourists who had managed to brave the morning chill. Looking out from Lincoln's point of view, a line of porta-johns stretched endlessly in the distance as the workmen steam-cleaned the monument's stairs.
That evening it snowed; and the lights and the snow gave everything a different cast. The White House looks almost cozy.
Nice images. Hard to believe that less than one week before you shot these photos, close to two million people were there. Your video shows how solitude is possible, even in the most unlikely places. Lynn
