Pity the mic of the camera is terrible...
People on IRC requested dance/trance music played so here goes, Gigi D'Agostinos L'Amour that probably more will recognize than Björk's tune.
Think its fake? Please visit my new video recorded 3 years after this one that shows some of the tweaking process.

What makes the noise is the whole harddrive vibrating.
On most other videos you will see the arm moving, however, the frequency it is moving at is too low to be possible to even hear. What you want is the arms to move as quickly as you can not see their movement, and if possible, the amrs tensed down into the harddrive case to have the whole case reproduce the sound, instead of just the tiny arms.
Hope that explains it a bit better.

The reason for the disks not spinning is that it only creates unwanted noise., it is not needed for acting like a speaker. The same reason go for the arms, if they were moving on top of the disks, they would create a lot of unwanted noise, just like you can hear most hard drive speakers sound here on youtube. Having it setup like I do with the arm tensed down to the HD casing instead, will have much better sound quality.

If you attach something to the writing head, you can vastly improve the volume and bass. :)

You obviously does not know the key properties of a speaker. I am using the strong magnet and coil, that exists in all harddrives, and using them as a magnet and coil in a regular speaker. You can try it yourself if you have two wires and know how to handle a soldering iron, and also check all the other people that have done it here already.
Im not playing any music at all from the metal disc, nor am I using them to produce the sound. I am only using the coil and magnet to make sound.

Sorry, wasnt notified by your post.
Basicly you need to find where the best position for the arm to stay, and then fasten ir really hard to that place. That way it sounds _alot_ better than when the arm is moving, even if not looking as fun :)
