Bangladeshi Islamic Militant Chief Nabbed

Bangladeshi security forces have arrested the chief of an NGO group based in Britain, suspected of funding Islamist militancy in Bangladesh. Here's more on the story.




Faisal Mustafa was arrested on Monday, April 6th, along with a companion at a house near Dhaka.




Officials know that Mustafa has dual Bangladeshi and British nationality and is the top man of the NGO group called Green Crescent.




They have been searching for Mustafa after a cache of arms and explosives were seized last month from an Islamic religious school in a village 350 kilometers south of the capital city of Dhaka.




Four militants arrested during the raid at the Green Crescent Islamic religious school had disclosed that Mustafa was the main financier of the school.




Mustafa was paraded in a news conference but he did not make any comments.




[Rezanur Rahman, Rapid Action Battalion]:

"We have not yet interrogated him, now we will take him back through legal procedures."




Members of the group were suspected to have been involved in the mutiny at the Dhaka headquarters of a paramilitary unit in February. About 80 people, mostly army officers, were killed in the mutiny.




The radical Islamist movement has been subdued since six top commanders were executed in 2007. But intelligence officials have said they were regrouping and might strike again.
