When I was young, we use to visit my Great-Aunt Maggie and Uncle Rollie almost every Sunday. Out back behind the house, there was a hedge row of these beautiful roses and every spring I would look forward to them blooming. I would gaze at their beauty and sniff their fragrant blooms. My mom wanted a start of these roses to plant in her yard but it never bloomed. Although my mom tried everything she could think of, it just wasn't to be. I always had to wait to go over to see my Great- Aunt Maggie's. Years passed and my cousins grew up and one by one moved out of the house. Aunt Maggie & Uncle Rollie decided to move to Florida to retire, so they sold the house, leaving the hedge row of roses behind.

About 20 years my mom called me and told me to come and dig this bush up, since it had never bloomed for her. Of course it was on the hottest day of the year and I'm sure you can imagine the root system this thing had on it. Although it wasn't easy, I got it dug out anyway. It came out in 2 pieces and I gave my sister the bigger half and I kept the smaller. Her half died as is often the case whenever she plants anything but mine lived. Since then each year I am greeted by tons of beautiful fragrant blooms!

My Great-Aunt Maggie & Uncle Rollie moved back to Ohio to be closer to their grandchildren and each year I'd cut a bouquet of her special roses and take them to her. It always brought her such great joy and she got a kick out of it that they bloomed for me but never did for my mom! lol

On a hunch I decided to drive past the old house to see if Great-Aunt Maggie's hedge row of roses was still there and although the house is still standing, the roses are gone. This is the last remaining MME. ISAAC PEREIRE Antique Rose in my family.

Just a little story I thought I'd share with our Youtube friends.

  • I dedicate it to my aunt Mima.I love her.And I miss her so so much!

  • @ajna88 Yeah I know what you mean. ಥ_ಥ

  • The modern tea roses often are not as fragrant either, because they're now cultivated for looks more than anything.

  • @slupine I can definitely attest to that and I don't have to worry about trimming it back and hitting the grafting cause there isn't one. So the roses will come back each year big and beautiful as the year before.

  • those are some beautiful roses..thanks for sharing :)

  • @BuffAngela158 Thank you! I don't think I did a very good job filming, they're much more prettier in real life.

  • I love antique rose bushes :)

  • Very beautiful! Thank you for sharing your story. =)

  • Beautiful roses! Im guessing this bush bloomed for you because when you planted it, you planted it with the special ingredient, Love

  • Mom passed away a few years back, and we're currently living in the house where she gamely planted some rose bushes (yellow roses were her favorites). Well, she never had the best of luck with them, but now, years later, we have a single, little bloom coming up on what I thought was a dead bush. When you mention in the description taking roses to your Great Aunt, I find myself wishing I still had my mom to give roses to. ='[.]'=

  • awww those roses are soooo beautiful i love them soo much....can i have one? X3

  • Would there happen to be a pack of super intelligent rats living under it with names like Nicodemus, Jenner and Justin?
