Inept Reviews: Advanced Lawn Mower Simulator

1988 was a terrific year for lawn mower enthusiasts. Not only did Flymo release a new exciting lawnmower, but expert programming developer 'Gardensoft' released this quintessential lawn mower simulator. This is the kind of accurate simulator that Codemasters could only dream of making.

A proper classic in every sense of the word. See my well-spoken self play the game, but will I make my millions mowing the lawn, or will I end up broke and with my begging cap out again like I do at the end of every month anyway? View and see and all that gubbins!

This game was supposed to be an April Fool's joke. It was made by one of the writers for Your Sinclair, Duncan McDonald, who "reviewed" it in the April 1988 issue, and gave it a YS Megagame award. Cue lots of baffled/amused letters the following month. Eventually it was released on a free tape with another ish of YS. One thing you didn't see in this video was the sudden death feature, where you run over a randomly placed rock and the mower explodes!

This is still my favourite collie review, for some reason. Why don't they make games like this today?
