Ed fires a 115 pound anvil skyward, using 2 pounds of black powder. It spins and climbs to nearly 500 feet, then returns to earth with a thump, burying itself two feet deep in hard ground, only a few yards from where it started!

Video produced in cooperation with SPRINGFIELDARSENAL.COM

Please see "Anvil in Orbit 2" for the whole series of 4 shots fired that day, with pictures of the launcher and retrieval equipment.

  • How far into the ground does it go?

  • @36POINTBLANK Hole depth is usually two to three feet.

  • Did it make a small crater? If it did, post a picture of it please!

  • @FourSeasonsReady See volume 2 of this video, photos at end.

  • Our anvil is cast steel, was made in Russia, about 110 lbs. We welded a half-inch-thick steel plate on the bottom so that would take the explosive force of the gunpowder and only transfer the momentum to the anvil.

  • From producer: This is a very brief clip showing one shot only. Our new video, "Anvil in Orbit 2" shows four shots including this one, and also shows the equipment we use.

  • Well, from a blacksmith's point of view that's a hell of a thing to do to an anvil....but looks like fun anyways. Harbor Freight has some anvils that would be perfect for that type of thing.

  • Excellent camera work.

  • Hey y'all - watch THIS!

  • Cool, wander what 156lbs 4oz would do... not that I have that much or anything 0_0

  • *Boom!*

    *Thud*
