To help answer a question regarding whether UV filters are any use with digital cameras, DRTV take a couple of filters out (Hoya & Hoya Pro) and show you what the benefits of using a UV filter and what the detriments are.

The video could say me big money. Next time I'm doing a tree slalom course with my DSLR, I'll know exactly what to protect the lens with. But does the Pro or basic model provide better protection against silver birch bark? More explanation is required...

@QRNPTBUZ that's great, but it's still useless. replace it with something a little more useful like a CPL or a graduated ND filter.

When the filter get smashed the lens will be scratch. Without a filter your lens will probebly be fine.

you run without filter and all was OK then you put it on did you think it get worst? Just put a hood on

They should really produce UV filters with shock absorbers.
