"The Outdoor Type" performed by Robert Harsch - vocal and 5-string fretless bass guitar.
"The Outdoor Type" was written by Australian musician Tom Morgan and originally recorded by his band, Smudge, as the title track of their 1993 album. American Evan Dando & his band The Lemonheads released a version in 1996 on the album "Car Button Cloth".

My bass is a Michael Kelly "Dragonfly" 5-string fretless acoustic bass guitar strung with Rotosound TruBass nylon-coated flatwound strings, tuned E-A-D-G-C. It's run through a Line6 Bass POD XT-Live pedal on the Variax Acoustic Upright patch, with Chorus Modulation.
Microphone is a Sennheiser 825s vocal mic.
Mixer is a Yamaha AW16G Digital recording console, but recording was done direct to the WMV-file audio track with $30 Camera/Software from Creative Labs LiveCam.

  • entertaining, good stuff...do you think its worth getting flatwounds for a fretless acoustic bass? I have a tanglewood fretless model

  • @DRVII - Thanks! If you want something closer to an upright bass sound, definitely go with flatwounds. Other benefits: less likely t o scratch the fingerboard (major factor w/ that lovely inlay on the Dragonfly); easier on fingertips than roundwounds, especially if you do a lot of slides.

Rounds have more edge on attack and work better than flats if you use a pick. They also tend to ring brighter and have a bit more acoustic volume. It comes down to personal taste in both feel and sound.

  • It almost sounds like a guitarron.

  • Yep. Same basic concept - a fretless guitar with flatwound strings. In fact, according to Wiki, "The guitarrón was the inspiration behind Ernie Ball's development of the first modern acoustic bass guitar, released on the market in 1972." (But another Wiki page mentions acoustic bass guitars in the 1950s and Ernie Ball's models in the 1960s.) The guitarrón's larger body gives it more volume than my Draqgonfly, but "that's why Muddy Waters invented 'lectricity!"

  • I watched this once ago. I thought it was hilarious! I still think it's great!! I guess I didn't comment the last time. ;)

  • Awesome man. Your lucky you got that Dragonfly fretless. They only make them fretted now. Keep up the awesome work!

  • The Song Sounds Just like A Lib, must be his Lib Song. Hunting and Fishing is the way of life. Hunt it kill it, fish catch it, and cook it and enjoy the tasty food.

  • Thank you, Jane!

I hope to record another bass/vocal piece soon - stay tuned!
