This short film shows electoral s on the north side of Pompeii's Via dell'Abbondanza. The town was literally and liberally daubed with electoral slogans throughout its life. They proclaim the names of candidates for the city magistracies of aedile and duumvir. Two of each served annually and took charge of civic services. Candidates had to fulfil a property qualification and could not belong to certain professions (eg acting) or be freedmen (ex-slaves). The aedileship mattered the most since a duumvir had to have served as an aedile first. The slogans have various abbreviations proclaiming a candidate's suitability, or the free gifts he had handed out, or insults painted up by his enemies.
