as ijustrippedyou said, it does straighten out the airflow. in a car without a diffuser, air flowing underneath the car will be mixed around, so it will push the car upwards, reducing maximum friction on the tyres so there would be more understeer through corners. understeer can ruin corners, but if you put a diffuser underneath your car, everything will be fixed! :D
