Part 2: The Match Race and its aftermath

This is the second part of my over 20 minutes long video about the legendary filly Ruffian.

This part tells the story of the Match Race with colt Foolish Pleasure on July 6th, 1975 at Belmont Park, Ruffians breakdown in that race and its aftermath.

Notes for this part:

There is a lot of footage of varying quality edited together in the pre-Match race sequence. I realise this can be a little awkward to watch, but I wanted to include as much original footage as possible.

I have not (as before in my other Ruffian videos) added footage of Ruffians breakdown. I have seen it several times and that was quite enough. I do use the audio from the race caller and show photos of the filly which could be disturbing, as in some of these the pain and panic of the filly are obvious. However sad or distressing this may be to some people, these images are a part of Ruffians life and without them the story isnt complete.

  • That ace should have nevr happened and tB racing neesto take a look at itself and ban racing 2 years olds(cripes they get on thm as long yearligs) , there k nees aren' ven closed yet,n o wonder they break down!, Eevn3 yaer olds do too. It is sick and barbric all for money.

  • @TheLaluna1

I agree this race should never have happened. Track owners pressured the owners and trainer because it would be good for racing. And I don't agree with match races in the first place, they prove nothing.

And like I said on your other reply, do you have any statistics to back up your claims of the number of horses, their age and the cause of breaking down?

  • do you know what happend to ruffian?she got slatered when she reatired

  • @horsegirlsforever

    What are you talking about??

Did you even watch the video before you commented? Ruffian broke down and after attempting a life saving surgery which failed, she had to be put down.

Please get your facts straight before spouting your opionion next time.

  • ;( Ruffian didnt had to proove herself on that match race...she was too young and not all grown up, thats why i dont like races where...fillysor colts od 2 year old race at. Ruffian was one of a kind, a vey very special filly, but i think if she wouldnt started racing at 2 year old she'll never had her leg broken science those years...she was damn fast an she really was a Ruffian, i was amazed when i sa her go that fast at belmont, i missed y Ruffian.

    R.I.P <3

  • She died for nothing!!!!!!

just for money. What did she do to deserve this?

  • Its cruel to think that after all the horses that have died from racing, that have suffered on and off the track, and it still goes on. Horses should not be forced to run. they should run when it comes to them. Its horrid that they have to race at such a young age. even to have a rider. Ruffin barley lived a life untill she died.Horse racing is creul. its only for money. R I P darling...

  • i cry.....

  • Gorgeous girl... they are just too young for such an effort. The skeleton is not mature... Ruffian, Barbaro and other broke a leg because of the training at young age.

  • Match race or a full field, we race them far too young.

  • they shouldnt have raced her.

  • I think Ruffian should have been put down right on the track the place She loved most instead of in a dark strange hospital.

  • Match races had been out of the picture for years before people decided to perpetrate this disastor. They should have left well enough alone.

  • how terribly SAD it is, that her life ended too quickly - perhaps the comment that this race should not have happened is CORRECT.
