My friend HumboldDF collected these Humboldt squid (Dosidicus gigas) beaks for me in 2005 at Shelter Cove, Humboldt County, California. Some unknown guys caught them while fishing. Also shown are a radula, and a pen. The dead one with the shark bites was at Cape Mendocino. These are also known as "flying squid" and "jumbo squid" but they are not "giant squid." They are not named for Humboldt County, but for the Humboldt Current off South America. (Both are named for Humboldt, the naturalist.) The Humboldt squid seem to be showing up farther north and in greater number in recent years -- occasionally in Humboldt County, California too...
