Liav Shalev [age 10] of West Pymble U12 chases the ball deep inside the opponent's penalty area. With only the goalkeeper to beat, Liav is closely followed by a Gordon defender, who finds a very special way to win the ball.

Was there any foul play?
What would you say was the referee's decision?

  • Why ask for opinions if all you do is disagree. No way this is a penalty u are bias toward ur son u isnt that great.

  • Thank you for comment.

If this is not a faul it is not a penalty, if it is a faul (arm holding) then it is a penalty. We can agree to disagree.

  • It's under 10 KDSA football ... more important things to worry about!

  • No worries mate... but seeing that you have commented: this was U12 - KDFA Football.

Why would you not play the game by the rules, no matter what the age? If kids at this age do not play by the rules, what should we expect from them when they grow up?

  • correct decision then. atacker clearly misses the ball, defender comes in a fraction late, but there's no malice. Uses shoulder not elbow. No way you can give that a penalty. Almost a case for play on as you can see the defender had no idea to attacker missed the ball.

  • Thanks for your opinion. So, what level referee are you?

It doesn't matter if one missed the ball. Off the ball, an elbow to the body is foul play! In the penalty area foul play that would elsewhere be a direct free kick, is a penalty kick. This is a yellow card offence too, no doubt! Shoulder or elbow? I say: clearly elbow! I'm confident since the same player used elbows many times off the ball too. If you insist, I might publish another clip to show you, in private. Just don't tell anyone ;)

  • no foul defender won the ball and attacker had lost control of the ball anyway

  • Can't guess the ref's call.

    I see it either way.

    trifling, doubtful, maybe.

    or simple foul.

However "foul play", to me implies some sort of dirty/reckless action. there was none. simple foul at best.

    but also doubtful/trifling.

the language in all guidance to referees regarding doubtful and trifling actions is very clear. let it go,

no call unless you're 100% sure.

as i said, could see either in this one.

simple foul, or let it go.

  • Use of elbow is more than just a foul. It is a bookable offence! Inside the penalty area, a penalty kick too! Unfortunately, this was only called an indirect free kick. The ref explained that the defender passed the ball to his goalie who handled it!

  • If he uses his albue there, it's a foul. It seems like he did, so it's probably a free-kick. I guess the ref's call was a penalty then?
