Most people know that campfires are smelly, messy, dangerous, wasteful, and remove us even further from the nature and wilderness we're trying to experience while out camping. Nevertheless, wherever I go in the backcountry I'm always running into the charred and scarred remains of some over-sized campfire that'll be a blight on our fragile Colorado landscape for the next decade. Whenever you create a campfire you're scaring away the wildlife, blocking out the stars, and shrouding your own camp in useless light and smoke. So, why not try camping WITHOUT a fire next time? If you really need to heat a meal, or brew some coffee, try one of those very energy efficient Earth-friendly backpacking stoves or even a solar oven! The main thing is that we need to stop denuding the forest just to roast a few marshmallows and hot dogs - neither of which aren't healthy for us anyway!!!

Oh, here's my personal page on other low impact techniques for the backcountry:

  • Brings wild life in Ecpesially Green wood of soft tree's

  • o shut up

    fire saves lives

    keeps hyperphermia from kicking in

    cooks food

    scares off insects an animals

    therefore making camping alot safer

thar is nothing wrong with making a big campfire

go film a nuclear power station and complain about how much co2 THAT gives off, and how much THAT ruins the view

  • I agree lets use Stoves or Backpacker Oven to cook. Todays stove can weigh as little as 5 oz. and the Backpacker Oven can bake items in less than 10 min. So save energy and resorces and lets not detroy the wilderness.
