As default the D3100's exposure is set to Auto when recording video.
Exposure may change depending on the subject and lighting conditions.
In this situation, exposure can be fixed by setting AE lock (Hold),
eliminating the need to hold the AE/AF lock button.

Note AE-L does not work in Auto setting.

1/ Press the menu button and go to the Setup menu.
2/ Scroll down to "Buttons".
3/ Choose "AE-L/AF-L button".
4/ Choose "AE lock (hold)" and press OK button.

Nikon should not have included all these "auto" features on their d3100 (video mode), world would have been better place. like auto iso, auto exposure, auto shutter speed..... etc etc.

I was getting ready to take this damned camera back to the store until I saw this video. Thanks. Why is this not set by default?

Thank You So Much! You simple and quick. I've had my D3100 for a year now and I always wanted to use the AE-Lock without holding the button while shooting video.
