  • @3catmandu California declared its self independent before the news of the Mexican-American War reached the few colonists. Hardly anyone in Alta California was behind the revolt. After 26 days, American troops reached Alta California, and the "revolution" was halted in the aspiration of joining the United States. If you can call that a Country, then sure... be proud of it.. But to be a country, technically, you must be recognized by other major countries. California was never.

  • Saw this tour at the Rialto Square Theater in Joliet,IL ////brought tears to my eyes. Drove the sound guys back from a restaurant in my limo.

  • @TeamJacob57 In 1821, California (a.k.a. Alta California) became part of Mexico when it won its independence from Spain. Again, Californians enjoyed a legal, formal and developed government. In 1846, the Mexican-American War broke out and shortly thereafter California declared its independence as the Republic of California. In 1850, two years after the end of the Mexican-American war, Mexico ceded to the U.S.A. California and New Mexico in the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo.

  • @TeamJacob57 first and foremost, I did not call you stupid. Read it again. Secondly, you are mistaken... again! Long before it was part of the U.S.A., California was part of two other countries at separate times, namely Spain and Mexico. By the late 18th century, it was a colonized territory of Spain and although still a pioneer frontier, was under the auspices of a legal, formal and developed government. As such, California’s citizens enjoyed some of the most enlightened rights of those times.

  • @3catmandu NO! Texas was the only state that downgraded from a country. The "California Republic" was a 26 day rebellion. They declared independence, but never had a government or actually became a country. Maybe you should actually know what you're talking about before you call other people stupid.

  • Yep, Lovett is an amazing storyteller and musician. His quirky charm is almost eclipsed by his music once he starts playing onstage. Seriously under-rated in the U.S. But his real strength and best qualities are his integrity and humility....a true gentleman of the finest order.

  • @TeamJacob57 omg, Jake. You must have been slipping some hallucinogenic 'shrooms into your salad last month! Surely you haven't forgotten your U.S. history. Yes, other states have been a country! California, like Texas, was also a republic before it became a part of the U.S. Our flag even has the words, "California Republic" written on it. So please tell us that you are not a US citizen; because at least that might go a long way toward explaining your ignorance.
