@176709 It seems Sonny did make a big impression on that impressionable 16yr old girl way back then. I think your parents made the best decision as it sounds like you have had a wonderful and intersting life since then. As a mother and grandmother yourself, you can probably appreciate that they made the right choice. Sixteen is really too young to be thinking about marriage and getting serious about life time partners. Thanks you for sharing here your lovely story.

@kavalasax Thanx. Yes I often thought about him over the years. i ended up going back to college and went overseas. i married a Native American and we have 2 sons and 13 grandchildren plus 3 great grand children.
My husband was in the US marines during the Vietnam war. We live in Australia now. Hes semi retired and I work as an Oceanologist and Marine biologist. [occasionly] One never forget their 1st luv. When I come back to NZ at Xmas, id like to go pay my respects to him at his graveside..

@tatnrf001 OMG Im so sorry about this. We were engaged way back in the 1960s in Auckland. We met at a clothing manufacturing plant in New Lynn, Auckland. I worked in administration and he was a trouser steam presser, plus he used to sing at a nightclub, dance hall in the city.
I was only 16 at the time and my dad and mom threw a spanner in the works because I was too young. I ran away in the end but it never lasted. So sad. He was my 1st love. Rest in peace my dear friend Sonny. Arohanui

only just found out Sonny died today. He was one of my favourite patrons at the thirsty rooster when i worked there. i was privileged to know him for 2 years and had some awesome conversations with him. Got to listen to him sing every thursday night.
will miss you bro!
Sonny was a great guy and a very dear friend, but the cigarettes took him too soon.
