Actually yes the Dems did basically began the KKK. But all that came to a basic end with Kennedy. When he announced that the Negro isseus was a moral issue and after the passing of the Civil Rights bill the racist Dems ran away and went to the Rebs. West Va. Democratic senator Robert Byrd was a high ranking member of the KKK. He joined in his 20's and continued in the Klan until his early 40's. You don't hear Matthews say much about that.
