Eberhard Zagrosek plays Beethoven, Sonata in E-flat major, Op. 81a "Les Adieux" during the semifinals of the fifth International Piano Competition for Outstanding Amateurs on June 2, 2007.
@nearenough3 -- to Fernando. Thanks for calling me on that. I'll retract my harsh comments. I was a little too testy that day. I relistened and it certainly sounds better this time (the slip was still there, but hardly noticeable). The piano is a touchy subject with me, so I over-react now and then. Easy listening!
The spirit the there, the intent is there -- I can sense it. But the occasional tempo lapses, the 4 or 5 minor gaffes, the memory slip all seem to add up to an uncomfortable listening experience. That's why the masters of the piano are the masters.
Fascinating to note, the intense concentration coupled with an artist,s hands, which seemed to coax out of the keyboard, this Masterwork of Beethoven. Played with both authority and reverence it worked beautifully.
Ugh... is it just me or is the sound quality really disappointing on this recording?

@nearenough3 .....and that's why it's called the Amateur Van Cliburn. Masters perform in the Van Cliburn.

Bravo ! Très bonne compréhension de l'oeuvre, cependant attention aux excès de vitesse (!) et aux nuances (piano subito).

An excellent performance of one of the greatest and most difficult of the Beethoven sonatas. Bravo! Too bad the very last chord is cut off!
