Jimmy Young was robbed. It's a shame he could never catch a break. He beat Ali and didn't get the nod there either. This loss took the heart out of him. He never made any money and died last year. He was the
most under rated fighter of the era.

I don't agree that Young beat Ali. You don't beat the champion by running around the ring making him chase you. Although Young looks at times like an Ali in boxing style and skills, his weakness, as seen here, is that he was rarely aggressive. Ali could be a defensive fighter like Young but he could also consistently hit flurries. Look at the 15th round here and this is typical of Young: even when he has a flurry he seems to run out of steam and retreats again. You can't beat your man like that.

Please don't use "ring generalship" as a point of victory for "the greatest in Norton v. Ali 3. With those punch stats, your argument about ring generalship is the only myth in this fight. How does a fighter who gets out-jabbed, out hit and out landed on power punches demonstrate ring generalship?
So what does that leave Ali to cling to as regards assertion to victory? Nothing! He got his ass kicked and everyone who knows anything about this sport is well aware of that fact.

Please feel free to correct my numbers by going to the compubox site where the punches were tabulated. When the decision was announced boos could be heard reverberating around Yankee Stadium. Numbers don't lie. There is a prepponderance of evidence to conclusively show Ali lost. So that is some of my research. Let's move to your research. I've already put paid to most of your comments regading an Ali victory. But let's here some hard FACTS about why you think Ali won. Waiting.

Here's some more research for you. Compubox final stats. Total Punches thrown: Norton threw 635 total punches, landing 281 for a 44% clip. Ali threw 759 and landed 199 for a 28% connect rate. Jabs - Norton 94 out of 289 - 33%. Ali jabs: 71 out of 345 for 20% landed. Power Punches: Norton 187 out of 346 or 54% to Ali's 128 for 364 for 35%. Total domination by Norton! The only stat Ali lead in was punches thrown, but not % - meaning he was drawing air. Numbers don't lie.

So when Ali is doubled over from a Norton body blow in one of the middle rounds, that does not count in your book that Ali was hurt? I have watched the fight several times. This "myth" of a Norton victory you refer to is one shared by East Side Boxing, the announcers at ringside, all the major sports publications and most of the major boxing authorities. Maybe Cosell thought Ali won.
Where is the myth in that kind of overwhelming opinion that Ali lost the fight?

@xxdonaldqxx He was the most underrated fighter

After Young robbed Foreman, Norton now robbed Young. All rounds were close or fairly close. Nevertheless, I score it 11-2-2 Young, with Young winning 1-5 and 10-15, and Norton winning 6 and 7, with 8 and 9 a draw. On the 10-point-must system, Young won 148-138. Young was disappointed with the result -- a disappointment that would become greater when he would find out a short time later that Spinks was stripped of his title and it was awarded to Norton. He was never the same again.

@ChampCarforlife Prime vs. Prime, Tyson-Young would be fascinating to watch. I worry that like Shavers, Tyson could pull off an early KO against Young. Or----could Young elude Tyson (like he did against Foreman) and pitch a shut-out? Young probably didn't have the power to KO Tyson, so he would have to plan for 12/15 rounds, something he was very good at. I think if they fought 10 times, Young would win 7 of them.

@dropway9 You should do some additional research on Ali-Norton III----some really good writing is out there. It's a myth that Norton was robbed, simply a myth. Please watch the fight again and score objectively. During his "best" moments, Norton fought like an amatuer, swinging wildly, off balance, uncontrolled. He never hurt the Champion. He never cut the Champion. He never scored a knockdown. Ali's ring generalship won the day.

Check this out! I think Jimmy Young would have beaten Mike Tyson just the way how Buster Douglas beat Mike Tyson because Young was the type of fighter just like Douglas would had impoised his will on Tyson.
Jimmy Young was a clever, smart and talented boxer. Its just to bad he hit with the power of a lightweight.

I've seen a couple of Jimmy Young knockouts. I think he was a better puncher than given credit for.

Great fight between two of my favourite fighters, and very close. Neither fighter received to many breaks from the judges in their careers.

Norton was certainly due for one but then again so was Jimmy.
