Peter Roach is Emeritus Professor of Phonetics at Reading University. He is also the author of 'English Phonetics and Phonology', the fourth edition of which was published by Cambridge University Press in March 2009.

In this clip, Peter Roach examines the advantages and disadvantages of the discourse intonation perspective on prosody. Discourse intonation looks at how speakers use intonation interactively; however, many prosodic features are excluded from analysis.

This lecture was recorded at the 11th Seminar on English Phonetics, hosted by the Phonetics Group Chile at UMCE, Santiago, in 2006. Our thanks to the Phonetics Group Chile for allowing us to use this material.

  • Peter Roach is a very well-known figure in the world of phonetics and phonology. I think he has made a very good job talking about Discourse Intonation, an approach which has not received its due attention. The remark Roach makes about Jack Lewis is true, though, and it is a pity that people like Lewis and Wells still hate Discourse Intonation on very subjective and unjustified grounds
