'It's a Material World', a new pamphlet published by Demos, demonstrates the social value of caring for the material world, and highlights the importance of conservation as being integral not only to the culture and heritage sector but also social well-being.

In choosing what things to care for, and how to conserve them, we reflect and create social value. Conservation therefore not only sustains and refreshes the values of the past giving us an understanding of where we have come from but also reflects values for the present and the future.

  • love how they show two completely different groups of people to prove a point. nicely done~

  • graffiti is art too. its just that with gang wars and things like that, (like tagging their simple logos and not art like in this video) graffiti is depicted as vandalism with reckless attitudes. many people are just too dumb to know the difference.

  • @dopedenim. obvious questions as many others dealing with social life and in general. but we do not need definitive rules or total agreement. who cares? answers are easier at the extreme: proper places is eg the wall of an abandoned warehouse. not proper place is eg the frontdoor of a private house etc. if you move from the extremes to the middle, there will be a gray area in which people involved will make a juddgement (passers-by, owners etc.)

  • who defines it good? what is proper places ? and is it just a banal tag ?

  • @punkslashhippy: good point. even architecture is temporary, or it should be... perhaps the point with this is not about conservation, but respect, for everyone (those doing good graffiti work on proper places and those that dont like having their frondoor splashed with a banal tag (a common thing here in milano)

  • i know many people that'd completely agree with this infact the majority of the graffiti world would and so do i at certain points.

but in my opinion making my piece temporary also makes it a bit more beautiful at the same time. i enjoy it more knowing that it might not be there tomorrow. and when its gone i'll do it again. for me its about the love of doing it its bout expressing, not the fame,

but i 100% support this. i want to get over the misconception of graffiti artist=thick criminal

  • fantastic video! what a great viewpoint I had no idea existed.
