Oh man, when I saw this, the dramatic irony in this made me rip my hair out!

@jonwiley The subtext of this scene is that if you are truly secure in who you are & your own sexual nature, the less threatened you'll be by anothers alternative nature. Spacey's character as the film progresses slowly learns to let go of worry & anxiety & just accept what is with serenity. He lets down the mask & becomes his true authentic self. The whole essence of the film is that no one is as they present themselves to the world. Except the boy next door who is true to his nature.

@ma1achite Since he had led a military life & an apparently heterosexual home life, he became paranoid that his life would be exposed as a sham. To a man of such pride & iron self discipline & self control in denying his true nature, this would have destroyed him. He never allowed himself the inner peace of trusting anybody, therefore silencing Spacey's character seemed the only option to him.
