R.I.P Boris Cikovic 1991-2008 (1 Year remembrance)

While police continued their hunt for a killer, 17-year-old Boris Cikovic's family spent yesterday making funeral arrangements.

"No one still believes what happened," family friend Jasmina Tijanic said from the Cikovic apartment in north Etobicoke. "The parents will never be. There's no words to say. It's awful. It's bad."

An only child, Cikovic was gunned down in Buttonwood Park, near Royal York Rd. and Eglinton Ave. W., during an apparent robbery around 10:30 p.m. Friday.

The Scarlett Heights Entrepreneurial Academy student was with about 10 friends when they were approached by three or four people demanding they give up whatever they had, his parents said. Cikovic handed over his two-dollar bag, which had a T-shirt in it, and was shot when he tried to get it back, they said.

Described by friends and family as a compassionate, straight-A student who excelled at several sports, Cikovic was Toronto's 53rd homicide victim this year.

It doesn't appear he knew his attacker.

Police continued to sort through varying versions of events yesterday, Det. Kim Gross said.

"We have a couple leads, but nothing that we've really been able to substantiate," she said. "We have a number of witnesses and they're young and there's a variation on the events."

It appears to have happened very quickly, Gross said. The fact that some stuff was left behind by the suspects may indicate the motive wasn't robbery.

"The (suspect) descriptions are terrible because of the lighting and the style of clothing," she said.

Some witnesses reported the group of teens were playing around with stun guns when they were approached.

"It's such a shame, too, because he's too young. He's 17," Gross said. "He was in good standing at school, the only child at home. We really feel for the parents. They're devastated."

Vesna and Davorin Cikovic brought their son to Canada as a young boy to escape war-ravaged Sarajevo.

They discussed returning his body to Bosnia.

A viewing has been planned for Wednesday from 5-9 p.m. at Turner and Porter funeral home at 2375 Bloor St. W., just east of Jane St.

Boris was my best friend and it still hurts to this day knowing I will never see him again but atleast he is in a better place where we can chill again one day.
