Our next-door neighbor gave us a nice 6 year old Mandarin Orange tree. But we had to moving from her yard to ours. In fear of killing it I read up on how to move it, there were many different explanations . I used some of the info and decided to move. I was able to keep the root ball intact and I believe I got all the roots in the ball. So far the moving of the tree seems to have no effect on the little guy!
What I read and thought made sense. Don't cut the branches back. Energy will go to making new branches instead of making new roots. Move it in the spring not the fall. Orange trees grow all season long so with or with out fruit I think it's ok to move.
Putting it in shock while cold weather is nipping at it does not make sense to me. I found that if you take a large root ball you may not put the tree into shock. I only saw one finger size root that stuck out past the root ball, all the rest were in the ball. So far after a week it still looks like it's never been moved. I'll give an update in a few weeks.
Thank's frvloc77
I just fed it some Citrus tree food from Home Depot

5/18/2011 just 3 weeks have past now and the tree shows no sign of shock. No loss of fruit and no loss of leaves. I fed the tree and it looks perfect. The fruit has doubled in size in just 3 weeks.
