Shell Island was originally named "Rattlesnake Island" because of all the rattlesnakes out there. This was in the first half of the 20th Century. They renamed it for obvious tourist reasons sometimes around the 1940s.
The snakes swim out to it. Rattlesnakes are very good swimmers.

there have always been snakes, coral, rattlers, its just rare because there is almost nom freshwater on shell island

There used to be no snakes on shell island, after the big fire. I think the DNR repopulated the island with them though

he could ruin your day! evertime I see someone running up into the brush to pee or whatever on the island I think no way in hell. that island is covered with rattle snakes.
