Well, he does remind me of a lion with that unruly mane and that habit of gnashing his teeth when roused, but there's one thing that gives it away -- those remarkably soft eyes.
And that great smile. Easily worth any three of the best in show business these days, I tell you. :)

The other day i saw Martin Shaw and Lewis Collins in The New Avengers. What's the chance of that then? It must have been filmed 2 years before they were together in the Professionals - and Shaw had straight hair!

That was filmed in the year the Professionals started filming and Martin Shaw was cast as Doyle due to his performance in The New Avengers. At least, that is what I have read.
Yes, Martin Shaw does have straight hair, the Doyle look is achieved with a perm ( Martin had already had a perm for the BEASTS episode "Buddy Boy" which was filmed in 1976
