2006 Formula One Gold Air Race at Reno Nevada. At 8:30am September 17th the Internation Formula One Air Race took off from runway 8 at Stead Field. This is what happened in the moments that followed. Gary Hubler in Race 95 'Mariah' got to the pylon first and didn't look back. David Hoover in Race 11 'Endeavor' gave it his best to catch up, only to have Mariahs power and sleekness prove superior. Charlie Greer in Race 69 'Miss B. Haven' slowly lost ground throught the race but finished a respectable 3rd followed by Scotty Crandlemire in the gorgeous Race 12 'Outrageous', Ray Debs in Race 81 'Carbon Slipper' 5th, Holbrook Maslen in Race 44 'Judy' - a super sexy Shoestring - came in 6th, and Jason Somes Race 4 'Alley Cat' 7th. Race 92 'Yellow Peril', Piloted by Doug Bodine DNF'd.

Couldn't believe it when I heard it. I've knew Jason Somes since early 2000 (worked in the aircraft industry), real stand up guy himself, hard to deal with for sure. Haven't talked with Jason in a long time, but I hear he's doing ok.

I was also a flagger for Gary. What a man. I will never forget him and the lessons of life that he taught me almost daily while getting ready for the night. Gary you were a great man.

I worked for Gary in the early 90s as his flagger while he cropdusted in area of Homedale, Idaho. He was a good man and the news of his death is very sad indeed. Best wishes to his family, and may he rest in peace.
