The poor cat was stranded throughout most of the day (and possibly the night). I would like to add that I'm not killing the cat, I just picked him up, walked through the foot of water and placed him on the dry stairs. But from the sounds of it, it does sound like I pulled his tail off or something equally horrible. My labored breathing is because I'm barefoot in 40F degree water up to my mid-calf.
