When the M-3 came out is was a stop-gap, but a good stopgap. It had the same 37mm gun as the Pz3, but also a 75mm howitzer that was effective against the towed antitank guns that were the main antitank defense in 1940-41. That capability made the German mixed defense less viable, and forced Germany to field armored antitank weapons against the West, like Stu-3, Hetzer, Marder, though much of German innovation was in response to Soviets. Panther was a marvelous defensive tank.
@yummmm11 Except that when it stopped, US would seek to smother it with WP smoke. Then the optics didn't matter. When it attacked, US tactics were to use mobile AT guns to penetrate from the side (M-10 or M-18, or the smaller number of M-36s). When US attacked, US would move to the side or rear, and get flank shots. Panther was tough, but not so tough as comparing gun penetration and armor thickness would have you think.
@yummmm11 So long as you know that Pershing had a stabilized gun, while Panther would have to stop, wait until the movement stopped, then align the gun. Normally that gave the US a few seconds. 75mm gunned M-4s would use the WP round to cover the Panther with smoke. sometimes the Panther crew would dismount rather than wait for the killing barrage. Panthers were tough. M-4s were faster at getting to the battle, and getting the first round into the enemy.
@DonMeaker Panther was better then the tiger in the mechanical sense. A Tiger broke down and often overheated it had to be towed long ranges. And it was too heavy it would bog itself down and collapse roads.
@yummmm11 In some ways. In other ways it lacked. Panther was less reliable, had slower traverse, and no stabilized gun. it was also higher by 10 inches, and so harder to hide, and wider, so less able to penetrate woods or cities. It had wider treads, and so was better on soft ground, a better gun, and better frontal armor (while quality was controlled). Panther was harder to penetrate, but more likely to detonate if penetrated.

@oxxExtinctionXXO 1.Der Vergleich würde mit einem M4 Sherman statt dem M3 Lee oder mit einem M26 Pershing nicht viel anders aussehen.
2. Sind Beutefahrzeuge nicht unbedingt einfach aufzutreiben.
