In prison, a knife is often fashioned by filing something down into a point, i.e. a shiv. After the shiv is made they will stab a rival, (or a fellow Chav)

Oh the truth in this video.
Also a couple of other things: they're generally scrawny little things, they ALWAYS hang around in groups of at least 10, general congregation areas include outside supermarkets and bus stops/shelters, and they live off the metaphorical government tit.
