I meant its safer in that in context of in training if you screw up/walk into it you only get a slap to the face, rather than a full on punch, plus its also safer for the attacer as you can't break you knuckles hitting someone full on with the yokomen atemi, whereas a full powered punch can break your own knuckles, as a heavyweigt boxer, I can't remember his name, found out in a street fight, yea he knocked the other guy out, but still broke 2/3 of his knuckles in the process of doign so.

the attack uses the principle of weight underside (ki term) to add to power and the way it is practised involves waiting for the last possible moment at which to hit whilst keeping awareness for the straight punch (or atemi) that would knock someone throwing a haymaker out cold.
hope that helps

you've got the right gist but i'd disagree on some points.
this is a much more dangerous version of a haymaker punch. people who swing their arms in a punch like that tend to have little control or awareness.
this attack is aimed at either the temple (with the underside hard bit of ur hand) or the neck (knockout points) or the back of the neck (to break it).

Am with you there, and i learnt to ukemi the hard way s my "original" instructor never taught me i just learnt it and seemd to be a natural at it haha, but you do tend to start wondering from how high, hard and fast you can take being thrown. best record for me so far has to be ukemi from about 6 and a half feet in the air over one of the other students, felt liek it took forever to land, also scared the hell out of the TaeKwonDo class next to us at the same time haha. Best regards Tom.

Why not use a bookken? have you seen the height of that ceiling ? also this is a slower, safer in dojo open handed variation of the "haymaker punch" if you can defend against this attack being done form this speed to full seed you can defend against that punch, commonly used by your typical untrained thugs out on the street.
thats how Aikido beats up a woman lol

it's the funnest part of aikido, although i'm a bit biased. each time i do it there's this drive to find what the next level of power feels like, and whether or not i can take it.
