Actually it was all about the Vietnam War. It was released in 1970, but the song was written solely for the purpose of displaying the anger and distaste that many had about that war. The Temptations were originally going to do the song but weren't prepared to be that vocal about the war, so Edwin Starr volunteered.

I agree with you all the way the undertakers was rich back then men 18 and 19 years blown away men come back with PTSD and disabled from severed spines and severed minds, brain trauma look I luv my country but I want to live and be with my family I will always be in good health.

This song WAS NOT so much about the Vietnam war (the opinion of most). It was actually about the KENT STATE UNIVERSITY SHOOTINGS where students were killed by the National Guard in response to their protesting our involvement in the Vietnam War.

@16pillars-actually the song was written before the Kent State Shooting ever occured so it was actually about the war.
