Thanks for your answer. That was a new one on me, so I looked in "Cagney by Cagney." Actually James was recounting a story from George Raft: "George told Freddie and me that in those early days he used piano wire for shoelaces. He laced them up tightly in order to numb his feet so he could dance faster. I told him that was dangerous as hell to do, and he agreed. 'I know,' he said, 'I found out later. I used to get pale green around the mouth. I was actually suffering a mild heart attack.'"

James Cagney's Auto biography, where he was speaking to Astaire about a dance scene he was filming in a movie, he started talking about the crazy things they both did to get (and keep) a job. Astaire mentioned the piano wires as shoelaces etc.
