  • thanks for sharing! i <3 Korea!

i remember when i came across this as an audio recording. i was impacted by it mostly because, as a american Buddhist, i matured greatly when i lived in S. Korea.

the "teaching" presented here is both funny and abrasive at times...something i believe our bhikku intended. i thank him.

as for Hinayana/Theravada v. Mahayana conflict...i've been told the Buddha said that all books are holy, yet not all words within them are...

    remember to smile.

  • Thanks for the comment. I shouldn't have labelled it "lecture" because that's not the way he intended it. But again, he says it's not even teaching; he's merely pointing to where to look. So this act of 'pointing' is what Hyongak sunim does in this dialogue.

  • There is only one truth,

    with many viewpoints to it.

Like many windows into the same house.

    Take what is useful,

    reject what is useless,

and assess against your own experience.

Surely the end result must be one and the same?

  • grewaljag , you have no idea what you're talking about, so please, keep your opinions to yourself until you understand more. The sound represented by the "dh" in "Buddha" is an aspirated (or breathy) voiced dental stop /d̪ʱ/. The sound of the "th" in the words you give is a voiced labio-dental fricative /ð/. NOT the same sound. Pali and Sanskrit did not have labio-dental fricatives. Your point about the vowels is correct, but you clearly don't know much about the sounds of Pali or English.

  • i could do without the worshipful music. he's doing us a favor, but come on, he's not god! tone it down!

  • Excellent

  • "very very very" educational!

  • I love Korean Buddhism since its very different from Chan and Zen schools of China/Japan. The oldest Diamond Sutra printed scroll in world is in Korea. : )

  • Thank you Teacher.

    Right here, right now

    in front of this computer,

    the Buddha Dharma speaks!

In the mountains or in the city

    are merely illusions now.

    Gassho.

  • thank you

  • Tell me how many people here understand your descrption of 'labio-dental fricatives'. Many may think it is something related to pussy anatomy!

My suggestion for pronunciation will do for most cpmmon people who are not liguiststs.

By the way I grew up in India and Punjabi is my mother tongue. As you know all the sounds in Sanskrit are also in Punjabi/Hindi and there are sounds and letters for d, soft d, dh and dhh. The reason I used "th" as suggestion was I don't know how to express dhh
