  • The best sun tan I ever got was at Cam Ranh Bay. I was there in 1970 when we invaded Cambodia. I was TDY with the 834th Air Division, Det 2, and it was a great bunch of guys except for some geek Master Sgt. who had a bad attitude and harrassed his subordinates to compensate for his impotent life. All it takes is one megalomaniacal six-striper to ruin things. I found out 40 years later that we picked up the fourragere of the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry and a Presidential Unit Citation.

  • This was South Beach right? We used to go there, but, we also went to the ocean side too.

  • I was stationed at Cam Ranh Bay from Feb 1967 to Feb 1968. Served at the USAF 10th Tactical Hospital. I worked the night shift in the Hospital and spent many days on the beach. I have some Super 8 movies of me running out of the water here. I hope to convert them to a video and put on my You Tube site. Got shot down in a C-130 at Phan Rang and participated in two mass casualty operations with over a hundred Vietnamese civilians headed to the base in large "callle" trucks that overturned.

  • @CRB7172 I too reached CRB the night of the Ammo Dump Hit at left around that sapper raid in 72. What unit were you with?

  • I was stationed at Cam Ranh Bay with the 500th Transportation Group, 124th Transportation Command, 08/1967 - 07/1968. I enjoyed snorkeling around that rocky island at the beginning of the video. A couple of buddies and me used to go out there to the beach because with the nurses and Red Cross ladies being out there amonst the troops, it was like a touch of home. It was for me a wonderful experience aside from the fact I missed my wife and two children and other relatives and just being at home.

  • What memories this brings back

  • We used to crawl thru the caves. There's a lot of maps posted but i don't see one, that clearly shows where everthing was. By that I mean where was the Army HQ/HQ bldg, the area nearby where we showed movies and watch philipino bands. the outside concert area where the local bands played, Army ER club. Where was the Army base in relation to the AF base. I'll make sure I'm logged in if anyone can point me in that direction or to a more detailed map ca. 1970. Thanks.

  • @CRB7172

Is there a part of you that misses it. I know a war was going on but this is a really beautiful place. Plus, the 70s were the coolest decade in American history IMO. Just so long as you didn't get sent to Vietnam (I was too young).

  • @CRB7172

That would suggest the viet cong had some kind of inside info.

  • @Rickaz28 We landed there the night the ammo dump was hit by sappers. I want to say March of 1971. It was like the 4th of July! Nothing much happened for the next 10 mnths until we stood down and they took up our weapons. F..king sappers again that night. Felt kinda naked but 101st was on the perimeter...

  • @ar4216 Zero! W. A. F. J. !!!!

  • 71-72 I want to say 50,000 troops came the DTC at Cam Rahn Bay. I was the courier for Headquaters at that time. Anyyone out there?

  • So I wonder how many of the drug addicts got better before "they left for the world". For that matter, did drug addicts volunteer to be taken to the hospital or did commanding officers recommend them or- how did that work. Sounds like you have an interesting, if somewhat depressing, job.

  • Cool. Hard to believe a war was going on when this footage was taken.

  • camranh is my hometown. my home is just 5km from the Camranh International Airport. Camranh now is on construction for Tourism. welcome All of you come to visit and enjoy time in VIetnam - camranh bay.

  • I was there doing the C130s ... 1967 1968. KennyV.

  • I was at HHD 73d Sig Bn 70-71. We partied both here and at South Beach. So beautiful there it's hard to believe there was a war going on.

  • I was a Air Force Security Cop at CRB 69-70-70-71, Thanks for allowing me to show my kids and friends just what it looked like.

  • Great Pictures... I was at the 6th Convalescent Center from December 68 (originally as a patient) to March 69 (I finageled transfer to be a lifeguard). Surfboards by Dale Velzy. The photos are a montage of other beaches as well. BBQ and Surfing Films are from 6th CC. You can still find the foundations on Google Earth. Mike Gaskins, Irvine, CA

  • And I was stationed at the HHD, 22nd Repl Bn in 71. I think I got to that beach once or twice. All the guys in the blue pajamas are probably from the 6th Conval. Center. My job was to go to the airport and take the drug addicts to the hospital before they left for the world. Dave

  • My dad was apart of the army expeditiary force that built that place.
