What if the relationship between Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson has been more intimate than a "simple" friendship? Possibly you will find some answers for Holmes' mood swings, his addiction to cocaine, his aversion against women and his caring behave towards Watson from this perspective. :)

Ah! Amazing thought anyway. If I may refer to my own experiences,I would say that this has something to do with sympathy, your mood and the strenght of the relationship. I would call myself a sincere person, but if there's a person I hardly know or if there's a person to whom I want to keep distance for some reasons (having arguments before, distrust, treated wrong...) I would react like Holmes. Nevertheless, Holmes might be frightened to be rejected/hurt by others.

@holmesfever Actually I was referring to Holmes as frightening and exhilarating at the same time to Watson. But anyone who doesn't like to be touched unless they initiate the touching, who is closed off from almost everyone, is frightened of something; either himself or others. In Holmes' case I'm not sure which one it is, if not both. It's ironic that someone who really doesn't care for people is so utterly dependent upon them for his livelyhood.

Intersting idea indeed! Holmes too frightened to take part in/at life? This thought is new to me, but it has something... to certain extend it goes with Holmes chosen profession: he waits for someone, who gives him a mystery to reveal, instead of taking part in society, leading a company, doing researches or anything else... interesting!

What an appropriate song! With all of Holmes' mood swings it must feel like a rollercoaster ride to Watson. You don't know how he will react from one minute to the next. Exploding into fits of rage at slight criticism or desperately holding back tears at a compliment from Lestrade. Why are people drawn to rollercoaster rides when they are so frightening yet exhilarating at the same time? Maybe that's the reason. Actually, at times, Holmes is more like a train wreck waiting to happen.

I know, you're very interested in Holmes' and Watson's friendship and me, too (next to other fasciating aspects of Doyle's stories, of course). Sometimes I ask myself about the reasons why Watson feels close to Holmes, though he nearly gets nothing in return. And then Holmes, who always wants Watson to attend him, though Watson often isn't of any use. They have to love each other, because there's no rational alternative. ;)
