ALL OF MY NOVELS ARE NOW AVAILABLE ON KINDLE AT AMAZON.COM. This song is a tribute to all veterans who were willing to lay down their lives for our country's freedom.

Words and Music copyright by Joe C. Ellis 2009

For Freedom (I'd do it again)
He stepped out the back door,
A veteran of the second war,
And a member of the American Legion.

Way back in 44,
His blood spilled on foreign soil.
He almost died defending our freedom.

Two punks from south of town,
Wandered by and knocked him down
Laughed in his face and stole his wallet.

I asked him, Was it worth the price,
To save this world and sacrifice.
For freedom, if thats what you call it.

Chorus:
Id do it again, my friend.
For God, for country. Amen
I did it once. Gave all I had. Let Uncle Sam say when.
For freedom Id do it again.

Stopped at Joes the other day,
For a beer to pass the time away,
Saw an old friend sitting in silence.

Hed lost his legs in South Iraq,
Been a year since hed got back
But in his dreams he still faced the violence.

Sat next to him in the smoky haze
Raised a glass to the glory days,
We laughed when we both felt like crying
I asked him, Was it worth the price,
To save this world and sacrifice
For freedom, with so many dying.

Repeat Chorus:

Finally went to church the today,
Fell to my knees and tried to pray
Oh God, is this country worth saving?

The hate, the crime, the insolence,
The abuse of the innocents,
I wonder how Old Glorys still waving.

On the cross I saw him hanging there,
His blood poured out every where
His eyes filled with compassion.

I asked him, Was it worth the price,
To save this world and sacrifice
For sinners in the state of this nation?

Chorus:
Id do it again, my friend
For God and mankind, Amen.
I did it once, gave all I had to take away your sin
For freedom Id do it all again.

  • Very nice, from a new citizen from ex-USSR now in NY. No one deserves more respect than a veteran or fallen man defending the freedom of the world. Both my grandparents were on the Eastern front in WW2. Song brings a tear to your eye.
