Every summer, New Yorkers and visitors to the city flock to Central Park for free SummerStage programs of music, dance, film, as well as authors reading from their books. The outdoor series was founded in 1986 to draw more New Yorkers into the park, which had a reputation as a nighttime haven for crime. In the 22 years since, the park has flourished, and SummerStage has become the city's leading outdoor performance venue -- especially for world music. VOA's Carolyn Weaver attended a recent event, and has this report.
