Profits from Tears: Labor Trafficking by an Electronics Giant -- A True Story

This video documents the interview of Dr. Nguyen Dinh Thang, Executive Director, of BPSOS and co-founder of Coalition to Abolish Modern-day Slavery in Asia (CAMSA), with two victims of labor trafficking. They are among 15 Vietnamese women recruited in late 2007 by JR Holdings, a Malaysian outsourcing company, to work at Sony plants in Penang and Bangi, Malaysia. Promised work for 27 months with Sony, they were returned by Sony to JR Holdings in late 2008. They have since been held at a holding center near Kuala Lumpur and forced to work without pay in odd jobs. Deprived of food and basic necessities, they had to beg for food. JR Holdings keep their passports and, as condition for repatriation, demand payments that these victims cannot afford. Their repeated calls for help to the labor export companies in Vietnam that had sent them off to Malaysia and to the Vietnamese embassy in Kuala Lumpur went unanswered. On July 18, CAMSA launched a public campaign to demand that Sony immediately ends the gross violations of human rights against the 15 women.
